In the gentle wetlands of Mithila, Bihar - where rivers thread through fields and the land whispers ancient tales - a humble aquatic seed began its journey more than two centuries ago. This seed, known as Mithila Makhana (or fox nut), was first cultivated in the ponds of Madhubani and surrounding areas of what we call Mithilanchal today.
For generations, local farmers - many from marginalized communities - embraced the laborious art of makhana cultivation. They harvested the floating seeds from ponds, carefully dried and roasted them, turning murky pond produce into crisp, nutrient-rich treats.
Over time, Mithila’s makhana - with its soft crunch, subtle nutty flavour and wholesome goodness - carved out a place of respect. It became a cultural marker: one of the “three proud identities” of Mithila, alongside pond and fish.
In 2022, this legacy was formally honoured: Mithila Makhana received a Geographical Indication tag (GI tag), recognising its unique origin and guaranteeing its authenticity.
